The second largest resort on the island, Playa de Santiago is still first and foremost a small harbour town with few restaurants and a virtual absence of nightlife. Other than several large pebble beaches and the island's sunniest weather, there's not much to keep you here - even the local hikes are dull by Gomeran standards.

Santiago comprises a number of smaller settlements in a broad valley, of which the sea-side Playa de Santiago is the most significant. Here the Avenida Maritima, a relatively busy seafront road housing the town's business district, including its few bars and restaurants, looks out onto the harbour, a huge sea defence wall of unattractive concrete blocks and, to the east, a pebble beach. Inland of this pebble beach, and separated from it and the Playa de Santiago by a large banana plantation, is Laguna de Santiago , a small functional village clinging onto the side of a steep hill where the handful of apartments offering accommodation have great rooftop views of the valley. Above the village, and overlooking the entire valley from its cliff-top vantage point, is the gigantic self-contained five-star resort-hotel Tecina.
