Cheapest flights to Leipzig
Leipzig has been home to many musicians and writers, and is embracing the market reforms it helped to usher in.
Leipzig is a gem of a Saxon city that you can explore fully in a day or two. It is an easy 2 hour trip by car or train south of Berlin.
Leipzig/Halle airport is 18km from the city center. There is a shuttle bus service to the main train station. It takes about 30 minutes and runs at 30 minute intervals through the business day. A taxi to the city center will cost about 30 Euros.
Leipzig's Hauptbanhoff has the most tracks of any railway station in Germany. It's a major transfer point for trains to just about anywhere. The station also features three floors of underground mall, and because it's in a train station, the stores are open until 10 pm. You'll find everything you need here for your journey--from inexpensive sandwiches and pastries to Eddie Bauer outfits.
Leipzig has been a trade center for centuries, and that presents a problem for tourists. You see, there are several hostels in Leipzig and many four star business hotels. There's nothing much in between. But the abundance of expensive business hotels means that the prices in summer, when there aren't a lot of major trade shows scheduled, can drop into affordability. We were able to get a sunday room at the Novotel (across from the train station and near the tourist information office) for 52 euros. Normal price is $100 for a double.
